Gord Ellis

Gord is a proven innovator, experienced leader, and highly capable computer engineer with over 20 years of experience delivering novel, creative and effective solutions to the energy sector that focus on energy conservation and demand management, energy informatics, and more recently smart grid enabled energy optimization. In total, Gord has over 25 years of technology-based experience creating robust, market-driven software and advanced computing solutions that leverage skills in the areas of real-time systems, software engineering, advanced model-based control, data communications, database design and human machine interfaces.  Through this combination of domain expertise, deep technical skills, and strong business acumen Gord provides unique and valuable leadership and insight on strategic technology-based initiatives.

Gord joined the Blackstone team in the spring of 2015 with a mandate to oversee the design and development of the core systems infrastructure that supports Blackstone’s strategic initiatives, and to deliver novel and innovative analytics based solutions to further enhance the customer value proposition.  Prior to joining Blackstone, Gord founded Soft Grid Analytics Corporation, a boutique management consulting firm providing “technology strategics” to energy sector stakeholders.  As the traditional grid and software / IT technologies converge a new “soft grid” is emerging as a truly intelligent electricity system is realized.  Soft Grid Analytics focused on delivering efficient and effective solutions which ensure that technology development / acquisition initiatives align with and deliver on corporate strategic goals and objectives in this space.  In doing so, the company offers to its clients a unique combination of deep sector knowledge and experience, strategic business acumen and an extensive technology background.

Previously, Gord co-founded Energent Incorporated, acting primarily in the role of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for the company. Through his leadership a market leading web-based energy informatics and analytics platform was created that “enables the intelligent use of energy” for industrial, commercial and institutional energy consumers.  Prior to starting Energent in 2007, Gord co-founded Northern Dynamic Inc. (NDI) in 1995, and acting as Co-CEO and R&D Director, led the development of world-class OPC middleware and toolkit products. NDI was sold to Software Toolbox of North Carolina in the fall of 2007. Gord has also held roles of R&D Manager for Dantec Systems (advanced model-based constrained optimization and control system for commercial drying applications e.g. ready-to-eat cereals, soymeal, pet food), Project Lead for Buhl Automation (multi-processor, state chart programming paradigm enabled control system for injection moulding machines), and was a Software Engineer for Honeywell in its Industrial Automation Systems Division (PC-based, network enabled viewport into the TDC 3000 distributed control system).

Gord is a graduate of the University of Waterloo's Computer Engineering program (Honours B.A.Sc. in Computer Engineering, 1989). He also graduated with distinction from Wilfrid Laurier University with a Masters of Business Administration (MBA, 1995), focusing on business strategy, strategic and B2B marketing, and finance. He maintains his Professional Engineering designation (P.Eng.) in the province of Ontario, and is also a contributing member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).  Gord has written several papers appearing in nationally distributed publications and is a co-inventor on two smart grid related international patent applications.
